The tantalizing icon that you see on Facebook inviting you to “check in” at your current location has been applied for as a trademark by Facebook this month.  According to the USPTO, On Wednesday, November 03, 2010, a U.S. federal trademark registration was filed for “F”.  The mark consists of a design of a pink and white pointer above a representation of a map and a white lower-case letter F within a blue square all of which is centered on a gold background. A one word trademark to protect the map pin icon currently used by Facebook Places.


The trademark application was filed with the following categories and descriptions of goods & services:

Class 016 – Paper Goods and Printed Material Products
Stickers; posters; decals

Class 035 – Advertising, Business & Retail Services
Incentive award programs to promote the sale of products and services of others; facilitating an incentive award program for others that provides coupons, rebates, and discounts to individuals who identify their location online; promoting the goods and services of others by providing a web site enabling users to identify their location in exchange for coupons, rebates, and discounts; retail store services

Class 041 – Education and Entertainment Services
Education services; entertainment services; hotel, restaurant, and bar services; facilitating contests and incentive award programs designed to reward individuals who identify their location online

Class 042 – Computer & Software Services & Scientific Services
Hosting an interactive web site that allows users to identify their location online
