On Tuesday, August 31, 2010, a U.S. federal trademark was filed for by Apple, Inc. with the description Personal and social services rendered by others to meet the needs of individuals, namely, online social networking and introduction services, according to the website Trademarkia.com. The significance of this new trademark filing is significant because it indicates that Apple’s ambitions go beyond creating a social network solely for music into realms directly competing with Facebook, LinkedIn, and others. Is Apple secretly working on a AppleBook facebook clone? It appears that this new trademark filing seems to indicate that. The trademark filing goes on to say “online social networking services, namely, facilitating social interaction among individuals, social introductions, and for finding persons with particular hobbies, interests and backgrounds; providing a social networking website”. Amazingly, nowhere in the trademark filing is there any indication that the mark has anything to do with music. In fact, the description is much broader, indicating ambitions beyond MOG and IMEEM.
